Is Your Website Blocked to ChatGPT? How to Check & Fix It

If AI can't read your site, AI can't recommend you. Here's how to check — including the silent firewall blocks most people miss — and how to fix it.

Is Your Website Blocked to ChatGPT? How to Check & Fix It

There's a question every site owner should be asking in 2026, and almost none are: can AI actually read my website?

If the answer is no, it doesn't matter how good your SEO is. ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity, and Gemini can only recommend what their crawlers can access. A blocked site is invisible in AI search — even if it ranks #1 on Google.

Here's how to check, and how to fix it if you're blocked.

The Two Ways Sites Get Blocked (and Why Most Don't Know)

When we tested the world's top 1,000 websites, we found 40.9% are unreadable to GPTBot. The blocking happens in two distinct ways:

1. Explicit blocking (robots.txt)

The site's robots.txt file directly disallows AI crawler user-agents like GPTBot or ClaudeBot. This is deliberate — 19.1% of top sites disallow GPTBot in their robots.txt. Big platforms like Amazon, X, Facebook, and Reddit do this to protect content from training, accepting invisibility in AI answers as the tradeoff.

2. Silent blocking (firewall/CDN)

This is the dangerous one. The robots.txt says "allowed," but the firewall or CDN bot-protection returns 403 Forbidden when an AI crawler's request actually arrives. We found 17.6% of top sites fall into this category — including IBM, Oracle, the Wall Street Journal, Etsy, and the UN.

These sites think they're AI-readable. Their published policy says yes. Their server says no. And nobody checks.

The marketing team optimizes content while the firewall silently discards every AI request.

How to Check Your Site in 60 Seconds

You don't need technical knowledge to find out where you stand. There are three quick ways:

Method 1: Check robots.txt manually

Open https://yourdomain.com/robots.txt in a browser and look for these user-agent lines:

  • User-agent: GPTBot (ChatGPT)
  • User-agent: ClaudeBot (Claude)
  • User-agent: PerplexityBot (Perplexity)
  • User-agent: Google-Extended (Gemini)

If any of them is followed by Disallow: /, you're explicitly blocked. If they're absent entirely, you're relying on the wildcard rule — check what it says.

Method 2: Test the live server response

robots.txt only tells you the policy. It can't reveal silent firewall blocking. For that, you need to send an actual request with each crawler's real user-agent and see what the server returns.

This is the step almost everyone skips — and it's where the 17.6% silent blockers hide.

Method 3: Use a free automated checker

The fastest option: run all seven major AI crawlers against your domain at once with a free AI crawler access checker. It parses your robots.txt and sends live requests with each real user-agent, so you see both the policy and the reality.

What "Blocked" Actually Costs You

When AI crawlers can't read your site, the consequences compound:

  • No AI recommendations — the model can't cite what it can't read, so it recommends competitors whose sites are accessible
  • Stale descriptions — AI falls back on outdated third-party info about your brand, or invents details
  • Wasted content investment — every blog post you publish is invisible to the fastest-growing discovery channel

This isn't hypothetical. We've seen billion-euro brands completely invisible to AI, losing the channel to smaller competitors who simply had their crawler access configured correctly.

How to Fix It (Usually Fast)

The good news: the fix is typically quick.

If you're blocked in robots.txt

Add explicit allow rules for the AI crawlers you want to admit:

User-agent: GPTBot
Allow: /

User-agent: ClaudeBot
Allow: /

User-agent: PerplexityBot
Allow: /

A word of caution: don't blindly copy big platforms' robots.txt files. They block AI crawlers to protect licensing leverage. For a typical business that wants to be found, that trade makes no sense.

If you're silently blocked by the firewall

Whitelist the verified AI crawler user-agents (and their IP ranges, if your CDN supports verified-bot programs) in your WAF or bot-protection settings. This usually takes under an hour to implement.

Check It Before Your Competitor Does

The 40% of top sites that are blocked create a structural opening for everyone else. Brands that are AI-readable get cited by default in categories where the "authority" players made themselves invisible.

Find out which side you're on. Run a free AI crawler access check now — and if you're blocked, fix it before your next competitor asks ChatGPT for a recommendation in your category.
