How to Win at B2B SEO

To win at B2B SEO, target the problems buyers research before they ever talk to sales, not just high-volume keywords. Build solution, comparison, pricing and integration pages that answer each member of the buying group, back them with expert content and proof, and measure organic pipeline, not traffic. Make sure AI assistants can find and cite you.

TL;DR: B2B buyers shortlist vendors before first contact, and they increasingly use AI tools to do the research. The brands that win organic search show up during that research with specific, credible answers: what the product does, who it is for, how it compares, what it costs and how it fits their stack. Low search volume is normal; one qualified deal can outweigh thousands of visits.

Key takeaways

  • In 6sense's 2025 research, 94% of buying groups ranked preferred vendors before first contact, and bought from that favourite 77% of the time.
  • Map keywords to buying stages and buying-group roles, not only to volume.
  • Many B2B sites lack the pages buyers look for late in the journey: pricing, comparisons, security and integrations.
  • Ungated, expert-led content earns links and AI citations; gated PDFs usually earn neither.
  • Connect Search Console and analytics data to your CRM so you can report organic pipeline and revenue.

Strategy: be there before the shortlist

B2B buyers do most of their research alone and decide early.

94% of B2B buying groups ranked preferred vendors before first contact, and they bought from that preliminary favourite 77% of the time. Source: 6sense 2025 Buyer Experience Report, survey of more than 4,000 buyers, published 12 November 2025.

If your brand is not visible during that research, you are often competing for second place before sales gets involved. B2B SEO therefore starts with the buying journey, not a keyword list. Map the questions each role in the buying group asks: the person with the problem, the technical evaluator, the budget holder and procurement or security. Then map those questions to stages:

StageExample queryPage typeConversion goal
Problemhow to reduce freight damage claimsExpert guideNewsletter, tool use, return visit
Solutionwarehouse management software for 3PLsSolution or use-case pageDemo request
Comparison[competitor] alternatives, [you] vs [competitor]Comparison pageDemo or trial
Validation[you] pricing, [you] SOC 2, [you] Salesforce integrationPricing, security, integration pagesSales conversation
Adoption[you] API rate limitsDocumentationRetention and expansion

Expect low search volumes. A query with 50 searches a month from the right job titles can be worth more than a 10,000-search informational term. Prioritise by closeness to revenue: validation and comparison pages first, solution pages next, problem-stage content after that.

The pages B2B buyers look for

These pages are often missing, thin or hidden behind a "contact us" button on B2B sites:

  • Pricing. Even if you quote per deal, explain how pricing works, what drives cost and typical starting points. Buyers search for it, and a vague answer sends them to a competitor that gives one.
  • Comparison and alternatives pages. Buyers search "[competitor] alternatives" when they are ready to switch. Be fair and factual, date your comparison, and describe competitors accurately.
  • Security and compliance. Security reviewers search for certifications, data residency and policies. A clear, indexable security page shortens reviews.
  • Integrations. One page per major integration, explaining what it does and how to set it up, targets queries with clear intent.
  • Industry and use-case pages. Separate pages for each industry you serve, with industry-specific problems, terms and proof.

For software companies, product-led pages such as templates, integrations and documentation often do much of the work; see our SaaS SEO service.

Technical SEO for B2B sites

B2B sites are usually smaller than retail sites, but they have their own common problems:

  • Gated content. A whitepaper behind a form cannot rank or be cited. Publish an ungated HTML version or a substantial summary, and gate an extended version if you must.
  • Content trapped in PDFs. Case studies, datasheets and spec sheets often exist only as PDFs. Publish the key facts as HTML pages.
  • JavaScript-rendered pages. Google's JavaScript SEO basics (updated 4 March 2026) says server-side or pre-rendering "is still a great idea because it makes your website faster for users and crawlers", and not all bots can run JavaScript.
  • Weak internal links. Blog posts often never link to solution pages. Google says "every page you care about should have a link from at least one other page" on your site, using <a href> links with descriptive anchor text (Google, updated 10 December 2025).
  • Documentation on a separate platform. Make sure docs subdomains are crawlable, in Search Console and linked from the main site.

Content: expertise over volume

B2B buyers are experts in their own field, and generic content does not convince them. Google's helpful content guidance (updated 10 December 2025) asks whether it is self-evident who wrote the content and whether it was made "primarily to help people". Its guide to generative AI search (updated 10 July 2026) asks for "non-commodity content" with a unique point of view.

In practice:

  1. Interview your experts. A 30-minute call with a solutions engineer or customer success lead produces material no competitor can copy.
  2. Use your own data. Benchmarks from anonymised customer or product data give buyers and journalists something new.
  3. Publish proof. Case studies with a stated starting point, the work done and measured results, in HTML.
  4. Build clusters. Group problem-stage guides around each solution page and link them to it. Our post on content clusters explains the structure.

B2B links come from the ecosystem around your buyers:

  • Partner and integration directories, such as app marketplaces and partner listings of the platforms you integrate with.
  • Industry publications and associations, through contributed expertise, data and commentary.
  • Original research that analysts, bloggers and journalists cite.
  • Events and podcasts, where speaker pages link back.
  • Customers who publish their own case studies or partner pages.

Avoid bought links. Google's spam policies (updated 28 August 2026) treat buying or selling links for ranking as link spam; sponsored placements need rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow".

B2B buyers already use AI tools in their research. The same 6sense report found that "ninety-four percent of buyers used them" (large language models) "to summarize reviews or analyze data" (6sense, 12 November 2025). When a buyer asks an assistant for a shortlist, the answer draws on your site and on third-party pages that describe your category.

  • State plainly what you do and for whom. Use the category terms buyers use, on your home page, solution pages and About page.
  • Keep facts consistent. Pricing model, integrations, certifications and customer segments should match across your site, review profiles and partner listings.
  • Be present where assistants look. Review platforms, comparison articles and industry roundups often shape AI shortlists. Keep your profiles current.
  • Let the right crawlers in. OpenAI says sites that disallow OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers" (OpenAI crawler documentation). Our AI crawler study of the top 1,000 websites (July 2026) found 40.9% blocked or failed to serve content to GPTBot, so check your own setup.

For Google, there is no separate checklist. AI Overviews and AI Mode have no extra requirements beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet (Google, updated 10 December 2025). Our GEO service covers monitoring and improving how assistants describe your brand.

Measurement: from rankings to pipeline

Traffic is a weak B2B metric. Report what sales and finance care about:

  • Organic-sourced and organic-influenced pipeline. Store the first-touch landing page and channel on every lead record in your CRM.
  • Self-reported attribution. Add "How did you hear about us?" to demo forms. Buyers often name an article, a search or an AI assistant that analytics missed.
  • Conversions by page type. Demo and trial requests from pricing, comparison and solution pages.
  • Query data at scale. Search Console's bulk data export sends daily performance data to BigQuery, except anonymised queries, so you can join it with CRM data.
  • AI feature impressions from Search Console's generative AI performance report (impressions only).

Two of our published case studies show what B2B organic growth can look like. A B2B tech company that started with no organic presence and relied entirely on paid ads recorded 340% organic traffic growth and 180+ MQLs a month over eight months. A manufacturing company whose leads came only from trade shows and word of mouth recorded +520% traffic and 25+ international enquiries a month over 12 months. Every starting point differs. Frequently asked questions

How is B2B SEO different from B2C SEO?

B2B purchases involve several decision-makers, longer cycles and higher contract values, and search volumes are usually lower. That shifts the focus from traffic to qualified pipeline, from single keywords to the questions each buyer role asks, and from volume content to expert, proof-backed pages.

Should B2B companies target low-volume keywords?

Yes, when the intent is right. A keyword with a few dozen monthly searches from the right job titles can produce more pipeline than a broad term with thousands. Prioritise by how close the query is to a buying decision, then by volume.

Should we gate our content?

Gated content cannot rank or be cited by AI assistants, because crawlers cannot see behind the form. Publish the core insight as an ungated HTML page. If you need leads from it, gate an extended version, templates or the raw data instead.

Should we publish competitor comparison pages?

Usually, yes. Buyers search for alternatives and comparisons when they are close to a decision. Keep the pages factual and dated, describe competitors accurately, and say who each option suits. Have legal review any claims about other companies.

How do we measure the ROI of B2B SEO?

Record the first-touch landing page and channel on every CRM lead, add a self-reported attribution question to your forms, and report organic-sourced and organic-influenced pipeline and revenue against your SEO cost. Rankings and traffic are leading indicators, not the outcome.
