How to Win at Fintech SEO

To win at fintech SEO, build trust before traffic. Google holds financial content to a higher standard, so every page needs a named expert, accurate and current facts, and a compliance check before it goes live. Pair that with a crawlable site, links from credible publications, and answers that AI assistants can quote without getting your fees wrong.

TL;DR: Fintech is a "Your Money or Your Life" (YMYL) category, so Google's systems give extra weight to content that shows expertise and trust. Winning takes a content workflow that combines subject experts with compliance review, clear trust signals on every page, a technical setup that keeps the app out of the index and the marketing site fast, and one consistent set of facts for search engines and AI assistants to read.

Key takeaways

  • Google says its systems give "even more weight" to content with strong E-E-A-T on topics that could affect people's financial stability.
  • Treat compliance as part of the content process, not a gate at the end. Regulators such as the FCA and FINRA set rules for promotional content in any medium.
  • Show who wrote and reviewed each page, when it was last checked, and which legal entity stands behind the product.
  • Programmatic pages (currency pairs, rate tables, city pages) need unique, accurate data, or they risk Google's scaled content abuse policy.
  • AI assistants synthesise answers from many pages. Keep fees, limits and eligibility rules identical everywhere you publish them.

Strategy: why fintech is YMYL and what that changes

Google's guidance on creating helpful, reliable content (updated 10 December 2025) says its systems give "even more weight to content that aligns with strong E-E-A-T for topics that could significantly impact the health, financial stability, or safety of people". It calls these "Your Money or Your Life" topics. Of the four parts of E-E-A-T, Google says trust matters most.

"YMYL Financial Security: Topics that could damage a person's ability to support themselves and their families." Source: Google Search Quality Rater Guidelines, section 2.3, version of 11 September 2025.

The rater guidelines use "how to invest money" as an example of a topic where "mild inaccuracies" could cause real harm. Rater scores do not set rankings; Google says rater data is not used directly in its ranking algorithms. The guidelines still show the standard Google is aiming for, and in finance that standard is high.

In practice this changes three things. You need fewer, better pages rather than volume. You need named experts. And you need a process that stops an inaccurate rate, fee or eligibility claim from going live. Plan your keyword map with risk in mind:

Query typeExamplePage typeRiskWho reviews
Product comparisonbusiness account for freelancersComparison or product pageHigh: claims about your product and competitorsProduct owner and compliance
Fees and ratesinternational transfer fees UK to USRate or pricing page fed by live dataHigh: accuracy and freshnessAutomated data checks and compliance
Educationhow does APR workExplainer or glossary entryMedium: must be accurate, not adviceSubject expert
Toolsloan repayment calculatorCalculator with written methodMedium: assumptions must be statedSubject expert and product

Start with the pages closest to revenue: product, pricing and comparison pages. Educational content comes next, grouped into clusters that each point to one product page.

Content: a compliance-aware workflow

Financial promotion rules apply online just as they do offline. The UK Financial Conduct Authority says "all financial promotions must be clear, fair and not misleading regardless of the media type", and it has published separate guidance on social media promotions (FCA, page updated 28 May 2024). In the US, FINRA Rule 2210 requires member firms' communications to be "fair and balanced", bans "false, exaggerated, unwarranted, promissory or misleading" claims, and requires a qualified registered principal to approve each retail communication before use. A retail communication is any written or electronic communication sent to more than 25 retail investors within 30 days.

Whether a particular blog post counts as a promotion depends on your regulator, your permissions and what the page says. That is a question for your compliance team, not your SEO agency. What SEO can do is make review fast and predictable:

  1. Brief with a claims list. Every brief lists the factual claims the page will make (fees, limits, eligibility, returns) and the source of each.
  2. Write with a subject expert. The writer drafts; a named expert checks the substance and adds first-hand detail.
  3. Review in one pass. Compliance reviews the draft with the claims list beside it and records its approval.
  4. Publish with dates. Show the author, the reviewer and a "last reviewed" date on the page.
  5. Re-review on a schedule. High-risk pages get checked whenever pricing or rules change and at least every quarter; educational pages yearly.

This workflow also answers the "Who, How and Why" questions in Google's helpful content guidance, which asks whether it is "self-evident to your visitors who authored your content". If you use AI tools in drafting, the same expert and compliance checks apply. Our post on how AI-generated content can hurt rankings covers where that goes wrong. Trust signals Google and users look for

The rater guidelines say any website involving financial transactions or sensitive information should have "comprehensive information about who is responsible for the site and a way to contact the site if something goes wrong". For a fintech brand, that means:

  • The legal entity name, registered address and, where your regulator requires it, your authorisation status and registration number, linked to the public register entry.
  • Clear contact and complaints routes, not just a chatbot.
  • Author and reviewer bylines that link to profile pages with relevant qualifications and experience.
  • Fees, limits and terms written in plain language on the page, not only in a PDF.
  • Organization structured data with legalName, address, contactPoint and sameAs, which Google says helps it "disambiguate your organization in search results" (Google, updated 8 September 2026).
  • Article markup that names each author with a URL that identifies them, as Google's Article structured data guidance recommends (updated 8 September 2026).

Technical SEO for fintech sites

Keep the app out of the index. Logged-in areas, onboarding steps and account pages should not be indexed. Google's robots.txt documentation (updated 10 December 2025) warns that robots.txt "is not a mechanism for keeping a web page out of Google"; use noindex or authentication instead.

Render marketing pages on the server. Many fintech marketing sites are built on the same JavaScript framework as the product. Google's JavaScript SEO basics (updated 4 March 2026) says server-side or pre-rendering "is still a great idea because it makes your website faster for users and crawlers", and not every crawler runs JavaScript.

Make calculators readable. Put the method, assumptions and a worked example in HTML text next to the tool, so search engines and readers can see what it does.

Control programmatic pages. Pages for every currency pair or every city can work when each has unique, current data. Without it they fall under Google's scaled content abuse policy (updated 28 August 2026): "many pages are generated for the primary purpose of manipulating search rankings and not helping users".

Separate countries properly. Products, rules and disclosures differ between the UK and the US. Use separate country versions and mark them with hreflang; Google's localised versions guidance (updated 21 September 2026) requires each version to list itself and all the others. Our technical SEO service covers these checks.

Finance journalists and analysts cite sources that add data or expertise. Links that work for fintech brands:

  • Anonymised data studies from your own product (spending patterns, transfer corridors, small-business payment times), cleared by compliance and your privacy team first.
  • Expert commentary from named people with relevant roles when rules, rates or markets change.
  • Partner and integration listings from banks, accounting software and marketplaces you work with.
  • Free tools such as calculators that other sites reference.

Avoid paid links for ranking; Google's spam policies treat them as link spam unless they carry rel="sponsored" or rel="nofollow".

AI assistants now answer money questions directly, and a wrong answer about your fees can cost you a customer or cause a complaint. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode have no extra technical requirements beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet, and that you "don't need to create new machine readable files, AI text files, or markup" (Google, updated 10 December 2025). Its AI optimisation guide (updated 10 July 2026) adds that Google Search does not use llms.txt files.

What matters for answer engine optimisation (AEO) in finance:

  • One source of truth per fact. AI systems combine several pages into one answer. If your pricing page and an old blog post give different fees, either may be quoted. Update or redirect outdated pages.
  • Facts in text. Put rates, limits and eligibility in HTML text and tables, not only in images or PDFs.
  • Direct definitions. Open explainers with a plain one-paragraph answer, then the detail.
  • Crawler access that matches your policy. OpenAI says sites that disallow OAI-SearchBot "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers" (OpenAI crawler documentation). You can still block GPTBot, its training crawler. In our AI Search Readiness Study (September 2026), 58.0% of sites that block GPTBot still allowed OAI-SearchBot.

Clicks behave differently in AI results. Pew Research Center found that users who saw a Google AI summary clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, compared with 15% when no summary appeared (Pew Research Center, 22 July 2025). For broad educational queries, being named and cited accurately may matter more than the click. Our AEO service covers monitoring and correcting how assistants describe your brand.

Measurement

Track outcomes that matter to a regulated business, not only rankings:

  • Qualified sign-ups and funded or activated accounts by organic landing page, joined to your product data.
  • Clicks and impressions for product and comparison terms in Search Console, reported separately from educational terms.
  • AI feature impressions from Search Console's generative AI performance report, which shows impressions by page, country, device and date but no clicks or queries.
  • Review freshness: the share of high-risk pages checked within their review cycle.
  • Answer accuracy: a monthly log of what ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity say about your fees and eligibility, and which pages they cite. Our guide to checking AI search visibility shows how.

Frequently asked questions

Is fintech content considered YMYL by Google?

Most of it is. Google's rater guidelines define YMYL financial security topics as those that "could damage a person's ability to support themselves and their families", and give "how to invest money" as an example. Content about payments, lending, saving and investing usually falls in that group.

Does Google require author credentials on financial content?

Google publishes no rule that requires credentials. Its helpful content guidance asks whether it is self-evident who wrote the content, and the rater guidelines say informational pages on clear YMYL topics may need a high level of expertise to be trustworthy. Named authors and reviewers with relevant experience are the practical answer.

Do fintech blog posts need compliance approval?

It depends on your regulator, your permissions and what the post says. The FCA applies its financial promotion rules regardless of media type, and FINRA requires principal approval for retail communications. Ask your compliance team which content types need sign-off, then build that step into the publishing workflow.

Can we use AI to write fintech content?

AI can help with research and drafts, but Google's scaled content abuse policy targets pages generated mainly to manipulate rankings. In finance, every AI-assisted draft still needs a subject expert to check facts and a compliance review before publishing.

How do we stop AI assistants quoting outdated fees?

Keep one current page for each fact, update or redirect older pages that contradict it, and publish figures in HTML text. Make sure the crawlers you want can reach those pages. You cannot edit an assistant's answer directly, but you can control the sources it reads.
