Definition
Technical SEO is making a website easy for search engines and AI crawlers to crawl, render, index and understand, separate from the content itself.
Technical SEO explained
Great content can't rank if search engines can't reach it, render it or decide which version to index. Technical SEO deals with that foundation. It is less visible than content work, but problems here can hold back every page on a site at once.
Typical technical SEO areas include:
- Crawlability: robots.txt, internal links, XML sitemaps and server responses.
- Indexability: noindex rules, canonical tags, duplicate content and status codes.
- Rendering: whether content loaded with JavaScript is visible to crawlers.
- Performance: Core Web Vitals and server response times.
- Structure: URL design, site architecture, pagination and faceted navigation.
- Structured data, hreflang for international sites, and HTTPS.
AI search adds new checks: whether AI crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot can access pages through firewalls and CDNs, and whether important content appears in the initial HTML, because many AI crawlers don't run JavaScript.
Example
Your new product pages aren't appearing in Google. A technical SEO review finds that a staging noindex tag was left on the template and the pages are missing from the XML sitemap. Removing the tag and updating the sitemap gets them indexed within days.
Why it matters
Technical problems cap the results of all other SEO work. Fixing them often lifts many pages at once.

- Core Web VitalsCore Web Vitals are three Google metrics for real-user experience: loading (LCP), responsiveness (INP) and visual stability (CLS).
- JavaScript renderingJavaScript rendering is running a page's scripts to build its content, which matters for SEO because some crawlers don't run scripts or run them late.
