JavaScript rendering is running a page's scripts to build its content, which matters for SEO because some crawlers don't run scripts or run them late.
JavaScript rendering explained
Many modern sites send a nearly empty HTML page and build the content in the browser with JavaScript frameworks. Googlebot can render JavaScript, but rendering is an extra step that can be delayed, and errors, blocked resources or slow scripts can leave content invisible to Google.
AI crawlers add another risk. Many of the bots behind AI assistants fetch the raw HTML and don't execute JavaScript at all. If your product details, prices or article text only appear after scripts run, those assistants may see an empty page and never cite it.
To check, compare:
- The raw HTML (view source, or fetch the page with a simple HTTP request).
- The rendered HTML in Google Search Console's URL Inspection tool.
- Whether key content, links and metadata are present in both.
The most reliable fix is to deliver important content in the initial HTML through server-side rendering or static generation.
Example
Your SaaS pricing page loads plans from an API after the page opens. Fetching the raw HTML shows no plan names or features at all, so AI assistants describe your pricing from old third-party posts. Rendering the plans on the server fixes it.
Why it matters
Content that only exists after JavaScript runs can be missed by search engines and many AI crawlers, costing rankings and citations.
