AI SEO Statistics 2026: 70+ Verified Stats & Key Findings

TL;DR: In 2026, most Google searches end without a click (68% in the US from January to April), a top ranking earns far fewer clicks when an AI Overview appears (58% fewer in Ahrefs' data), and AI assistants now reach very large audiences: ChatGPT has 900 million weekly users, Gemini 950 million monthly users. Our own scans add one more finding: many established websites stop AI crawlers at the firewall without knowing it. Below are more than 70 statistics from 30 sources. We opened each source and confirmed each number on the page before including it.

Every statistic has a source link and a date, and we name the dataset behind it (clickstream panel, keyword sample, survey or server logs). We will review the list quarterly.

Key findings

  • Zero-click is now the norm. 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click from January to April 2026, up from about 45% ten years ago (SparkToro, June 2026).
  • AI Overviews cut clicks to the top result. When an AI Overview appeared, the page in position 1 had a 58% lower average click-through rate (Ahrefs, February 2026).
  • AI assistants now have search-engine-sized audiences. ChatGPT has more than 900 million weekly active users (OpenAI, February 2026). The Gemini app has 950 million monthly users, and Google's AI Mode has passed 1 billion (Google, July 2026).
  • Being cited pays. Brands cited in an AI Overview had a 35% higher organic click-through rate and a 91% higher paid click-through rate than brands that were not cited (Seer Interactive, November 2025).
  • Many sites block AI crawlers without knowing it. 76.3% of 1,319 well-known websites failed at least one basic AI-search check, and 15.4% turned AI crawlers away at the firewall while robots.txt welcomed them (Vidern, September 2026).
  • AI visitors convert. In March 2026, traffic from AI sources to US retail sites converted 42% better than other traffic (Adobe, April 2026).

How we chose and verified these statistics

  • Primary sources first. We used the organisation that produced the data wherever we could: Google, OpenAI, Pew Research Center, Cloudflare, Adobe, Ahrefs, Semrush, SparkToro, Seer Interactive, BrightEdge, BrightLocal and Edison Research. Where a survey is only available through a trade publication, we name both.
  • Every number checked on the page. Between 29 and 30 September 2026 we opened each source and confirmed the exact figure, its date and what was measured. The dates shown are publication dates. The period the data covers is given in the text.
  • Dropped if we could not check it. Some widely shared figures are left out because we could not open the original page or could not find the number on it. Examples: McKinsey's AI search consumer figures and Gartner's search-volume forecast (both pages blocked our checks), and common "voice search share" claims with no primary source.
  • Our own data is labelled. Two studies come from Vidern's own scans. The method for each is published in full on the linked study pages.
  • Who compiled it. Malhar Shah, founder of Vidern, who has done SEO since 2016.

Featured: Vidern's original data

We ran two scans in 2026 to measure something other studies skip: whether AI crawlers can reach a website at all. In the AI crawler study (July 2026) we tested the top 1,000 sites in the Majestic Million (927 were measurable). In the AI Search Readiness Study (September 2026) we tested the next tier, ranks 1,001 to 3,000 (1,319 were measurable), on five checks.

40.9% of the web's most authoritative sites are unreadable to GPTBot, and 17.6% allow GPTBot on paper but return 403 Forbidden when it arrives.
Source: Vidern AI crawler study, July 2026
  • Only 2.8% of top-1,000 sites disallow Bingbot in robots.txt, but 19.1% disallow GPTBot. The blocking targets AI crawlers specifically (Vidern, July 2026).
  • 76.3% of the 1,319 sites failed at least one of five checks: AI answer bots allowed in robots.txt, firewall access, content visible without JavaScript, Organization schema, and an XML sitemap plus meta description (Vidern, September 2026).
  • 56.4% of those sites had no Organization schema, the most common failure. 9.7% showed no content until JavaScript ran (Vidern, September 2026).

The practical point: a site can publish a welcoming robots.txt and still refuse AI crawlers at the CDN or firewall. Nobody sees it in analytics, because the blocked visit never happens. You can test your own site with our free AI visibility checker.

AI Overviews and zero-click search

68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click in the first four months of 2026.
Source: SparkToro, using Similarweb clickstream data, June 2026
  • In 2024, 58.5% of US and 59.7% of EU Google searches ended without a click. For every 1,000 US searches, only 360 clicks reached the open web; in the EU it was 374 (SparkToro and Datos, July 2024).
  • About 45% of Google searches were zero-click ten years ago, compared with 68% today (SparkToro, June 2026).
  • AI Mode is not the main cause yet: only 0.34% of searches in the SparkToro panel went to AI Mode from January to April 2026 (SparkToro, June 2026).
  • 18% of the Google searches Pew tracked in March 2025 produced an AI summary (Pew Research Center, July 2025).
  • Users clicked a link inside the AI summary itself in just 1% of visits (Pew, July 2025).
  • Users ended their browsing session on 26% of pages with an AI summary, against 16% of pages with only traditional results (Pew, July 2025).
  • AI Overviews appeared on 6.49% of queries in January 2025, peaked at 24.61% in July 2025 and stood at 15.69% in November 2025, across a 10M+ keyword sample (Semrush, December 2025).
  • AI Overviews are spreading beyond informational queries: informational intent fell from 91.3% of AI Overview keywords in January 2025 to 57.1% in October 2025 (Semrush, December 2025).
  • AI Overviews reached more than 2 billion monthly users in over 200 countries and territories and 40 languages (Google, July 2025).
  • Google says AI Overviews drive over 10% more queries globally for the types of queries that show them (Google, July 2025).

  • ChatGPT has more than 50 million consumer subscribers, and more than 9 million paying business users (OpenAI, February 2026).
  • About half of ChatGPT messages (49%) are "Asking", seeking information or advice; 40% are "Doing", such as drafting or planning (OpenAI and NBER, September 2025).
  • Three-quarters of ChatGPT conversations focus on practical guidance, seeking information and writing, and about 70% of consumer use is not work-related (OpenAI, September 2025).
  • 34% of US adults have used ChatGPT, including 58% of adults under 30 (Pew Research Center, June 2025).
  • 28% of employed US adults use ChatGPT for work, up 20 points in two years (Pew, June 2025).
  • 57% of Americans aged 12+ have used a generative AI assistant, and 93% know at least one generative AI brand (Edison Research, The Infinite Dial, March 2026).
  • Generative AI platforms draw about 9.5 billion visits a month worldwide, up 70% in a year (Similarweb, August 2026).
  • Fewer than 7% of ChatGPT prompts included any source citation as of May 2026 (Similarweb, August 2026).
  • Over 30% of humanity, 2.5 billion people, now use generative AI regularly (Cloudflare, July 2026).
  • AI answers are unstable: there is less than a 1-in-100 chance that ChatGPT or Google's AI returns the same list of brands twice across 100 runs of one prompt, and roughly 1 in 1,000 for the same order (SparkToro, January 2026).

So a single screenshot of an AI answer proves little. Track how often your brand appears across many prompts and runs.

AI crawlers and access

52% of crawler requests were for AI training as of June 2026, up from 22% in spring 2025.
Source: Cloudflare, July 2026
  • More than 50% of traffic on the internet is now non-human (Cloudflare, July 2026).
  • Some of the most heavily crawled categories have seen human traffic fall by as much as 40% in less than a year (Cloudflare, July 2026).
  • Google still accounts for about 88% of referral traffic (Cloudflare, July 2026).
  • In July 2025 Anthropic crawled about 38,000 pages for every visit it referred back, OpenAI 1,091 and Perplexity 195 (Cloudflare, August 2025).
  • GPTBot's share of AI and search crawler traffic grew from 4.7% in July 2024 to 11.7% in July 2025. Googlebot still accounted for 39% (Cloudflare, August 2025).
  • US retail product pages scored 66% on Adobe's AI content visibility check, meaning about a third of their content is not readable by machines. Homepages scored 75% (Adobe, April 2026).

AI crawlers now take up a large share of server load, security teams block them at the firewall, and marketing teams do not always know. Before you invest in generative engine optimization, confirm the crawlers can reach your pages.

Content, citations and E-E-A-T

Brand web mentions show the strongest correlation (0.664) with AI Overview brand visibility, far stronger than backlinks (0.218).
Source: Ahrefs, 75,000 brands studied, May 2025
  • 26% of the brands Ahrefs studied had zero mentions in AI Overviews (Ahrefs, May 2025).
  • 37.9% of URLs cited in AI Overviews also ranked in the top 10 for the query, down from about 76% in Ahrefs' July 2025 study. 31.0% ranked outside the top 100 (Ahrefs, March 2026).
  • YouTube made up 18.2% of AI Overview citations that did not rank for the query (Ahrefs, March 2026).
  • Only 12% of URLs cited by AI assistants rank in Google's top 10 for the original prompt. For Perplexity the figure is 28.6%; for ChatGPT's in-text citations, 8.0% (Ahrefs, August 2025).
  • Pages cited by ChatGPT search rank in position 21 or lower for related queries almost 90% of the time (Semrush, July 2025).
  • Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit together made up 15% of the sources listed in Google's AI summaries, and 17% of those in standard results (Pew, July 2025).
  • In the original academic GEO study, generative engine optimization methods boosted visibility in generative engine responses by up to 40% (Aggarwal et al., KDD 2024).

What this means for E-E-A-T: AI systems lean on what others say about you, not only on your own pages. Mentions on credible sites, reviews and videos count, and clear, well-sourced answers make your own pages easier to quote. That is the core of answer engine optimization.

Local and voice search

Use of ChatGPT and other generative AI tools for local business recommendations rose from 6% to 45% in a year, making AI the third most popular source.
Source: BrightLocal Local Consumer Review Survey, February 2026
  • 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses (BrightLocal, February 2026).
  • 40% of consumers trust AI platforms to recommend businesses, and 42% trust them as much as traditional reviews for local recommendations (BrightLocal, February 2026).
  • On voice: we found no current, primary-source figure for the share of searches made by voice, so we have not included one. The nearest verified number is Edison's: 57% of Americans aged 12+ have used a generative AI assistant (Edison Research, March 2026).

For local businesses, reviews now serve two audiences: people and the AI tools that summarise them. Review volume, recency and owner replies feed both.

SEO budgets and ROI

The average AI search visitor is 4.4 times as valuable as the average traditional organic search visitor, based on conversion rate.
Source: Semrush, July 2025
  • Semrush projects that AI search could send more visitors than traditional search for digital marketing and SEO topics by early 2028 (Semrush, July 2025).
  • Traffic from AI sources to US retail sites grew 393% year on year in January to March 2026 (Adobe, April 2026).
  • In March 2026 AI traffic converted 42% better than non-AI traffic. A year earlier it converted 38% worse (Adobe, April 2026).
  • Visitors arriving from AI sources stayed 48% longer and viewed 13% more pages per visit (Adobe, April 2026).
  • 39% of US consumers have used AI for online shopping, and 85% of them say it improved the experience (Adobe, April 2026).
  • Google's Search and other revenue grew 17% in Q2 2026. So far, AI features have not shrunk Google's search revenue (Google, July 2026).
  • 67% of content marketers see LLMs as more of an opportunity than a risk, and 75% already use AI tools in their standard workflow (Clutch 2026 State of Content Report, survey of 450+ marketers, via Demand Gen Report, March 2026).
  • Only 14% of SEO and marketing professionals track AI or LLM citation visibility (GoodFirms survey of 100+ professionals, September 2026).

AI referrals are small in volume but convert well, and the visibility before them rarely shows in last-click reports. Add AI citation share and branded search growth to your reporting.

Frequently asked questions

What percentage of Google searches end without a click in 2026?

SparkToro's analysis of Similarweb clickstream data found that 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click from January to April 2026. In 2024, SparkToro and Datos measured 58.5% in the US and 59.7% in the EU. Different panels give slightly different figures, but the trend in every study points the same way.

How much do AI Overviews reduce organic traffic?

It depends on the query and on whether your brand is cited. Ahrefs found a 58% lower click-through rate for the top-ranking page when an AI Overview appears (December 2025 data). Seer Interactive found organic CTR on AI Overview queries fell 61% between June 2024 and September 2025. Brands cited in the AI Overview lost fewer clicks than those that were not cited.

Is SEO still worth investing in when AI answers so many questions?

Yes, but what you invest in should change. AI assistants and AI Overviews draw on web content that search engines can crawl and index, so technical SEO and strong content still come first. The difference is that success now includes being cited in AI answers, not only ranking, and AI-referred visitors tend to convert well: Semrush measured 4.4 times the value of a traditional organic visitor.

How do I know if AI crawlers can access my website?

Check two layers. First, your robots.txt: does it allow GPTBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and OAI-SearchBot? Second, your firewall or CDN: request a page with an AI crawler's user agent and check for a 200 response rather than 403 or 402. In our September 2026 study, 15.4% of sites passed the first check and failed the second.

What is the difference between SEO, GEO and AEO?

SEO (search engine optimization) aims for rankings and clicks in search results. GEO (generative engine optimization) aims for your brand and content to be used and cited in AI-generated answers from ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews. AEO (answer engine optimization) focuses on structuring content as clear, direct answers that these systems can quote. In practice they overlap: the same crawlable, well-sourced content supports all three.
