Short answer
Find which of your important keywords show an AI Overview, then compare the expected click-through rate for your ranking position with and without one. Multiply the difference by each keyword's search volume to estimate the clicks lost. Our free AI Overviews Traffic Loss Calculator does this with published click-through research and shows the result as a range.
The full answer
Studies of click-through rates have found fewer clicks to organic results when an AI Overview appears, although the size of the effect varies by query type, position and industry. That makes an estimate more useful as a range than as a single number. The calculator's method section lists the research it uses, with dates.
A practical approach:
- Export your top keywords with positions and search volumes from Search Console or a rank tracker.
- Check which of them currently show an AI Overview, using a rank tracker that records search features or by searching yourself.
- Apply a click-through rate for each position with and without an AI Overview.
- Add up the differences to estimate the clicks lost now, and model what happens if AI Overviews spread to more of your keywords.
Then decide what to do. Protect the pages that lose the most clicks by making them strong candidates to be cited in the AI Overview, put more weight on commercial queries that still lead to site visits, and measure brand visibility, not just clicks.
The Keyword Traffic Forecast does the same maths for a single keyword and position, with or without an AI Overview.
