Engagement rate

Also called: engaged sessions, bounce rate, GA4 bounce rate

Definition

Engagement rate in GA4 is the percentage of sessions that were engaged: lasted longer than 10 seconds, included a key event, or had 2 or more page views.

Engagement rate explained

GA4 counts a session as engaged if it meets any of three conditions: it lasted longer than 10 seconds, it included a key event, or it had two or more page or screen views. Engagement rate is the share of sessions that were engaged. Bounce rate in GA4 is simply the opposite: the share of sessions that were not engaged.

This is different from the old Universal Analytics bounce rate, which counted any single-page session as a bounce, even if the visitor read the page for several minutes. Comparing old and new bounce rates is therefore misleading.

Use engagement rate to compare pages and channels, not as a target in itself. A low engagement rate on a landing page for paid traffic may point to poor message match or slow loading. On the other hand, a quick-answer page can have short sessions and still satisfy visitors. Look at engagement alongside key events and scroll depth before drawing conclusions.

Example

Your paid social campaign brings many sessions but a very low engagement rate, while organic search visitors to the same page are mostly engaged. The ad's promise doesn't match the page, so you adjust the ad copy rather than the page.

Why it matters

Engagement rate helps you spot pages and traffic sources that attract the wrong visitors or disappoint the right ones.
