Organic traffic value

Also called: traffic value, traffic cost, equivalent ad spend

Definition

Organic traffic value estimates what your organic search visits would cost if you paid for the same clicks with search ads.

Organic traffic value explained

The calculation multiplies the estimated organic clicks for each keyword by that keyword's typical cost per click in Google Ads, then adds them up. SEO tools report it automatically for the keywords they track, and you can calculate it yourself from Search Console clicks and Google Ads CPC data.

It is a useful way to express SEO results in money terms, especially for stakeholders who understand advertising budgets. It shows roughly what it would cost to replace your organic traffic with ads, and makes gains and losses easy to compare with paid spend.

Treat it as an estimate with limits:

  • It isn't revenue. Informational traffic can have a high value on paper but convert poorly.
  • Tool click and CPC estimates can be well off for any single keyword.
  • Branded traffic inflates it, because you would rarely pay the full price to capture your own brand searches.

Pair it with conversions and revenue for a complete picture.

Example

Your guides rank for several expensive software keywords. Multiplying their monthly organic clicks by the average CPC for those keywords shows what the same visits would cost in Google Ads each month. That is your organic traffic value.

Why it matters

It turns organic visibility into a figure leaders can compare with ad budgets, which helps justify SEO investment.
