Google Search Console

Also called: GSC, Search Console, Webmaster Tools

Definition

Google Search Console is Google's free tool showing how a site performs in Search, which pages are indexed, and technical problems Google finds.

Google Search Console explained

Search Console is the most direct source of data about your site in Google Search. Its main reports include:

  • Performance: clicks, impressions, click-through rate and average position by query, page, country and device.
  • Page indexing: which pages are indexed and why others aren't.
  • URL Inspection: how Google sees a single URL, including the rendered HTML, with an option to request indexing.
  • Sitemaps, Core Web Vitals, HTTPS and enhancement reports for structured data.
  • Manual actions and security issues, plus the links report.

Unlike keyword tools, Search Console data comes from Google itself, although it is sampled and filtered in places, especially for rare queries. It is the place to check first when traffic drops, after a migration, or when new pages don't appear in search.

Verify every version of your site, give the right people access, and connect it to GA4 so search data and on-site behavior can be viewed together.

Example

Your organic traffic drops after a template change. Search Console's page indexing report shows a spike in pages excluded by a noindex tag, pinpointing the cause within minutes.

Why it matters

It is Google's own view of your site. Most SEO diagnosis starts with Search Console data.
