Message match

Also called: ad-to-landing-page match, ad relevance

Definition

Message match is how closely a landing page's headline, offer and wording mirror the ad, email or search that brought the visitor there.

Message match explained

When someone clicks an ad promising “same-day laptop screen repair” and lands on a generic electronics repair homepage, they have to work to confirm they are in the right place, and many don't bother. Strong message match makes the landing page feel like the direct continuation of the click.

To improve message match:

  • Repeat the ad's main promise, in similar words, in the landing page headline.
  • Carry through the offer, price framing or discount the ad mentioned.
  • Match the visual style when the traffic comes from display or social ads.
  • Build separate landing pages, or dynamic headlines, for ad groups with different intents.

In Google Ads, message match also feeds into ad relevance and landing page experience, two of the components behind Quality Score. For ChatGPT Ads, the principle is the same: the landing page should answer the question the user was asking when the ad appeared.

Example

Your ad says “Accounting software for freelancers: free for 30 days”, but it lands on a page about enterprise finance teams. A landing page headed “Accounting built for freelancers, free for 30 days”, with freelancer examples, fixes the message match.

Why it matters

Strong message match reduces bounces from paid clicks and tends to improve both conversion rate and ad performance.
