Guest posting

Also called: guest blogging, guest post, contributed article

Definition

Guest posting is writing an article for another website, usually with a byline and a link back to your own site.

Guest posting explained

Done well, guest posting shares genuine expertise with a new audience: a founder writes a practical article for a respected industry publication, readers learn something, and the author earns visibility and a link. Done badly, it becomes a link scheme: low-quality articles placed on sites that exist mainly to sell links.

Google's spam policies list large-scale article campaigns with keyword-rich anchor text links as an example of link spam, and many publications now mark guest-post links as nofollow or sponsored. Paying for a guest post that passes ranking credit is treated like buying a link.

Guest posts are worth doing when:

  • The publication has a real audience you want to reach.
  • The article is genuinely useful and written by someone with expertise.
  • The link, if any, is natural and relevant, and the value doesn't depend on it.

Treat guest posting as thought leadership that may produce a link, not as a link-building shortcut.

Example

Your founder writes a detailed article on reducing warehouse picking errors for a respected logistics magazine, with an author bio linking to your site. The article brings enquiries from readers, which is worth more than the link itself.

Why it matters

Quality guest articles build authority and brand recognition with the right audience, while mass guest posting for links is a spam risk.
