Linkable asset

Also called: link bait, link magnet

Definition

A linkable asset is a piece of content created mainly to be referenced and linked by others, such as original research, a free tool or a definitive guide.

Linkable asset explained

Most commercial pages, such as service or product pages, rarely attract links on their own. Linkable assets fill that gap. They are built around something other writers need: data to quote, a tool to recommend, a template to share, or a resource that explains something better than anything else available.

Formats that tend to attract links:

  • Original studies, surveys and industry benchmarks.
  • Free calculators and tools that solve a specific problem.
  • Glossaries, guides and explainers that become the standard reference.
  • Visual assets such as charts and diagrams others can embed with credit.

A linkable asset still needs promotion: outreach to journalists and writers who cover the topic, sharing in communities where it is genuinely useful, and updates to keep it current. Once it earns links, internal links from the asset to your commercial pages share that authority where it helps the business.

Example

Your mortgage broker brand builds a free calculator that shows how different deposit sizes change monthly repayments. Personal finance blogs and news articles link to it when writing about house buying, and those links strengthen your whole site.

Why it matters

Linkable assets let a site earn links at scale without buying them, and they are highly citable in AI answers too.
