Search volume

Definition

Search volume is the estimated number of times a keyword is searched in a given period, usually per month, in a chosen country or language.

Search volume explained

Keyword tools estimate search volume from sources such as Google Ads data and clickstream panels. The figures are estimates, often rounded into ranges and averaged across a year, so treat them as a guide to relative demand rather than an exact count.

Volume alone is a poor way to choose topics. A high-volume keyword may be dominated by large brands, answered directly on the results page, or searched by people who will never buy from you. A lower-volume query with clear buying intent can be worth far more. Seasonality matters too: some queries peak for a few weeks a year.

To turn volume into a forecast, multiply it by a realistic click-through rate for the position you can expect to reach, then by your conversion rate. That gives a rough view of visits and leads, and helps you compare topics on business value rather than size alone.

Example

Two topics are on your list: “CRM” with very high volume and “CRM for property managers” with far less. Forecasting clicks and conversions for each shows the niche query could bring more qualified leads to your brand within a year, so it goes first.

Why it matters

It sizes the opportunity, but only when combined with intent, difficulty and expected click-through rate does it tell you what a keyword is worth.
