Definition
Answer-first content puts the direct answer to a question in the first sentence or two of a page or section, then adds explanation, evidence and detail.
Answer-first content explained
Journalists call it the inverted pyramid: the most important information first, then supporting detail in decreasing order of importance. On the web it serves three audiences at once. Readers scanning on a phone get their answer immediately. Search engines can pull a clean passage for a featured snippet. AI assistants can quote a self-contained answer without guessing which paragraph matters.
In practice, each section starts with a heading that matches the question, then one or two sentences that answer it plainly, with a figure, a definition or a recommendation where possible. Context, caveats, examples and sources follow. Avoid opening with background, history or an explanation of why the question is important.
Answer-first doesn't mean thin. The detail below the answer is what builds trust and helps the page rank. It simply means readers and machines don't have to dig for the point.
Example
Your page on “how much does commercial roof repair cost” used to open with your company history. You rewrite the opening to name the three factors that drive the price and when a repair beats a replacement, then explain each factor below. That rewrite is answer-first content.
Why it matters
It is one of the simplest changes that improves both featured snippet and AI citation chances, and it usually helps readers stay on the page too.
