Definition
GEO (generative engine optimization) is making your brand easy for AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini to find, trust and cite.
GEO explained
Traditional SEO aims for a high position in a list of links. GEO aims for your brand to be named, recommended or linked inside an AI-generated answer. The two overlap, because most assistants retrieve live pages or a search index before they answer: a page that can't be crawled or indexed can't be cited.
GEO work usually covers five areas:
- Access: AI crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Googlebot can reach your pages, including through your firewall or CDN.
- Answerability: pages state the answer early, in plain language, with specific facts a model can lift.
- Entity clarity: the same name, description and facts about your company on your site, profiles and structured data.
- Third-party evidence: reviews, comparisons, research citations and community discussions that mention you.
- Measurement: tracking which prompts mention you, how you are described and which competitors appear instead.
Google says that optimizing for its AI features is still SEO and needs no special markup. Other assistants run their own crawlers and retrieval systems, so crawler access and mentions on other sites matter more there.
Example
A buyer asks Perplexity for “CRM software for small law firms” and the answer lists three vendors, one of them your brand, with a link to your comparison page. Getting onto that list, through crawlable pages, clear product facts and mentions in the reviews and articles Perplexity draws on, is GEO.
Why it matters
Buyers increasingly ask an assistant for a shortlist before they visit any website. If the assistant doesn't know or trust your brand, you are left out of that shortlist.
