AI Mode is a chat-like view of Google Search where AI answers complex questions in depth, with links to supporting pages and follow-up questions.
AI Mode explained
Where an AI Overview is a summary on a normal results page, AI Mode is a separate, chat-like view of Google Search. Google describes it as particularly helpful for questions that need further exploration, reasoning or comparison, and people can ask follow-up questions without starting a new search.
Google says AI Mode may use query fan-out: it breaks a question into subtopics, runs many related searches, and brings the results together into one answer with links. A single conversation can therefore draw on pages that rank for many different queries, including long-tail questions few people would type into a normal search box.
The eligibility rules are the same as for AI Overviews. Pages need to be indexed and eligible for a snippet, and there is no special markup. In practice, content that covers a topic thoroughly, with each subtopic answered clearly under its own heading, gives AI Mode more passages to choose from.
Example
A homeowner asks AI Mode “compare heat pumps and gas boilers for a three-bedroom house, including running costs and installation time”. Google fans the question out into several searches and links your installation-time guide in the answer, even though that page ranks for a much narrower query.
Why it matters
AI Mode rewards depth across a topic rather than one page aimed at one keyword. Brands with well-organized topic coverage have more chances to be linked during longer research journeys.
