Definition
Citability is how easy it is for an AI assistant to lift a passage from your page and quote it as a trustworthy, self-contained answer.
Citability explained
AI assistants build answers from passages, not whole pages. A passage is citable when it makes sense on its own, answers a specific question directly, and contains concrete information: a definition, a figure with its source, a set of steps, a comparison, or a clear recommendation with its reasoning.
Common reasons a page scores low on citability include long introductions before the answer, key facts hidden in images or in tabs that don't render for crawlers, vague marketing language, and claims without dates or sources. Pages built from short, descriptive sections, each starting with its answer, tend to do better.
Citability is not a metric published by any AI company. It is a practical lens for reviewing content: read each section and ask whether an assistant could quote it, word for word, as the answer to a real question. Vidern's free GEO audit scores AI citability as one of its categories for this reason.
Example
Your guide to “how often to service a commercial boiler” buries the answer in the fourth paragraph. You move a two-sentence answer, naming the regulation it comes from, directly under the heading. Assistants can now quote that passage as it stands. That is what improving citability means.
Why it matters
Two pages can rank equally, but the one with quotable passages is more likely to be the one an assistant cites.
