Definition
Conversion tracking records valuable actions people take after seeing your ads or visiting your site, such as purchases, sign-ups, calls or leads.
Conversion tracking explained
Without conversion tracking, advertising platforms only know about clicks. With it, they know which clicks led to results, and automated bidding can optimize toward them. Tracking is usually set up with the Google tag or Google Tag Manager, by importing key events from Google Analytics, or by sending data from your CRM or server.
Common tracking set-ups include:
- Purchases with order value, for e-commerce.
- Form submissions and calls, for lead generation.
- Offline conversions imported from a CRM, such as qualified leads and closed deals.
- Micro-conversions, such as starting checkout, used carefully as secondary goals.
The most common problems are counting the wrong things (page views as conversions), counting the same conversion twice, missing conversions because of broken tags after a site change, and ignoring lead quality. Audit tracking after every redesign, migration or form change, and compare platform numbers with your CRM regularly.
Example
After your website redesign, Google Ads shows conversions dropping to zero while sales say leads are steady. The new form's thank-you step no longer fires the conversion tag. Fixing it restores tracking before Smart Bidding cuts bids on campaigns that are actually working.
Why it matters
Every bidding decision, human or automated, is only as good as the conversion data behind it.
