Performance Max

Also called: PMax, Performance Max campaign

Definition

Performance Max is a goal-based campaign type that uses automation to run Google ads across Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps.

Performance Max explained

Google describes Performance Max as a way to access all Google Ads inventory from a single campaign. You provide conversion goals, an optional target ROAS or CPA, a budget, creative assets (headlines, descriptions, images, videos) and audience signals. Google's automation then decides where to show ads and bids for conversions in each auction.

For online stores, Performance Max with a Merchant Center product feed is now a common way to run Shopping ads. For lead generation, it can reach more people than Search alone, but it also needs close watching.

Things to manage carefully:

  • Conversion tracking: the campaign optimizes toward whatever you count as a conversion, good or bad.
  • Brand traffic: it can take credit for searches for your own brand that would have converted anyway.
  • Lead quality: without offline conversion data, it may optimize for cheap, low-quality form fills.
  • Visibility: reporting is less detailed than Search campaigns, so review search terms and placement insights.

Example

Your e-commerce brand launches a Performance Max campaign with its product feed, strong product images and a Target ROAS. It soon reaches shoppers on YouTube and Discover as well as Shopping, and you exclude branded searches so reported returns reflect new demand.

Why it matters

Performance Max can scale results across Google's channels, but it amplifies whatever signals you feed it, good or bad.
