Definition
Smart Bidding is a set of Google Ads bid strategies that use Google AI to set bids in each auction to maximize conversions or conversion value.
Smart Bidding explained
Google describes Smart Bidding as bidding strategies that use Google AI to optimize for conversions or conversion value in every auction, a feature it calls auction-time bidding. The four Smart Bidding strategies are Target CPA, Target ROAS, Maximize conversions and Maximize conversion value.
Because it bids for each individual search, Smart Bidding can take into account signals such as device, location, time and the search itself, which manual bidding can't. It performs well only with accurate conversion tracking, enough conversion volume to learn from, and targets that are realistic for your account.
Common pitfalls include:
- Tracking the wrong conversions, such as page views or low-value form fills, so the system optimizes for the wrong thing.
- Changing targets or budgets too often, which resets learning.
- Setting targets far from current performance, which can choke volume.
- Not feeding back which leads became customers, where offline conversion import is possible.
Example
Your B2B brand switches to Maximize conversions and gets more leads, but sales say most are unqualified. Importing which leads became opportunities from your CRM, and bidding toward those, teaches Smart Bidding to find buyers rather than form fillers.
Why it matters
Smart Bidding can outperform manual bidding at scale, but only when the conversion data it learns from reflects real business value.
