Definition
Google Merchant Center is where stores upload product data, such as titles, prices and stock, so products can show in Shopping ads and free listings.
Google Merchant Center explained
Merchant Center holds your product feed: a structured list of every product with attributes such as title, description, price, availability, brand, identifiers and images. Google uses it to show products in Shopping ads, Performance Max campaigns and unpaid product listings across Google.
Feed quality drives results. Good practice includes:
- Product titles that include what shoppers search for, such as brand, product type, size and color.
- Accurate prices and stock that match the website, to avoid disapprovals.
- High-quality images that follow Google's requirements.
- Correct product identifiers such as GTINs where they exist.
- Regular checks of the diagnostics page for errors and warnings.
Stores on Shopify and other platforms can sync their catalog through an app or integration, but the synced data still needs review. Product structured data on the website should match the feed, since Google can use both.
Example
Your outdoor store's feed uses internal product names like “TRK-200 Blue”. Rewriting titles to “Trekking Pole, Lightweight Carbon, Blue, 2-Pack” matches how shoppers search and helps your products appear for the right Shopping searches.
Why it matters
For e-commerce, the product feed is the foundation of Shopping visibility, paid and free.
