E-E-A-T (Experience, Expertise, Authoritativeness, Trustworthiness)

Also called: E-A-T

Definition

E-E-A-T stands for experience, expertise, authoritativeness and trustworthiness, the qualities Google uses to describe reliable, helpful content.

E-E-A-T explained

E-E-A-T comes from Google's guidance on creating helpful, reliable, people-first content and from the guidelines its search quality raters use. Google says its systems use a mix of factors to identify content with good E-E-A-T, and that trust is the most important of the four; the others contribute to trust.

Google also states that E-E-A-T itself isn't a specific ranking factor. It is better understood as a description of what ranking systems try to reward. Google gives it more weight for topics that could significantly affect people's health, financial stability, safety or society, often called YMYL topics.

Ways to show E-E-A-T on your site include:

  • Named authors with real bios and relevant experience.
  • First-hand detail: photos, results, methods and lessons from doing the work.
  • Sources and dates for facts and figures.
  • Clear information about who runs the business and how to contact it.

Example

Two articles explain “how to fix a leaking flat roof”. One is anonymous and generic. The other is written by your roofing company's named site manager, shows photos from real jobs and explains which repairs fail and why. The second shows far stronger E-E-A-T.
