Definition
A content cluster is a group of pages on one topic: a central pillar page covering the subject broadly, linked to and from detailed pages on each subtopic.
Content cluster explained
The cluster model organizes content the way a good textbook is organized. A pillar page gives the overview and links out to cluster pages that each go deep on one question or subtopic. Each cluster page links back to the pillar and, where it helps readers, to related cluster pages.
This structure helps in three ways. Readers can move from overview to detail easily. Search engines can see which pages are related and which is the main page for the topic. And the internal links spread authority from pages that earn links to pages that need it.
Clusters also suit AI search. When an assistant fans a question out into sub-queries, a well-built cluster has a clear, answer-first page for each of them. Plan clusters from real questions and search data, and give every page a distinct intent so pages don't compete with each other.
Example
Your HR software brand builds a pillar page on “employee onboarding” with cluster pages for onboarding checklists, remote onboarding, first-week schedules and onboarding software comparisons. Each links back to the pillar, and the pillar links to each, forming one content cluster.
Why it matters
Clusters turn scattered blog posts into a structure that builds topical authority and makes each new page easier to rank.
