Content decay

Also called: content refresh, traffic decay

Definition

Content decay is the gradual loss of rankings and traffic that a page suffers as its information ages and competitors publish newer, better answers.

Content decay explained

Most pages don't keep their rankings forever. Statistics go out of date, products and screenshots change, competitors publish more thorough pages, and search results shift towards different formats. Traffic declines slowly, so decay often goes unnoticed until a page has lost most of its visitors.

To spot decay, compare clicks and impressions for each page over the same period year on year in Search Console, and flag pages with a steady decline. Then check why: is the information stale, has intent changed, or has a competitor simply done a better job?

The usual fix is a genuine refresh: update facts and examples, add sections for new questions, improve the answer at the top, check internal links, and update the visible date only when the content has really changed. Pages that no longer serve any purpose can be merged into a stronger page or redirected.

Example

Your software guide “email marketing tools compared” was your top page two years ago but its clicks have fallen steadily. Three of the tools have changed their plans. Updating the comparison, adding two newer tools and a clearer summary table is how you reverse the content decay.

Why it matters

Refreshing a decaying page is usually faster and cheaper than ranking a new one, so decay reviews are among the most efficient content work you can schedule.
