Definition
A category page lists a group of related products in an online store and is usually the page that ranks for broad product searches.
Category page explained
In e-commerce, category pages (called collections on Shopify) often matter more for SEO than individual product pages. Shoppers searching broad terms want to compare options, and search engines tend to rank pages that show a range of products for those searches.
Strong category pages usually have:
- A descriptive title and H1 that match how shoppers search.
- A short introduction and helpful buying guidance, placed so products stay visible.
- Filters that help shoppers without creating thousands of indexable duplicate URLs.
- Internal links to subcategories and related categories.
- Enough products to be useful, and sensible handling when items sell out.
Category structure should follow demand. If shoppers search for “waterproof hiking boots”, a dedicated subcategory will usually rank better than a filter setting on a general boots page.
Example
Your furniture store sells many sofas, but the only page is “Sofas”. Keyword research shows demand for “sofa beds” and “corner sofas”, so you create category pages for each with tailored titles and buying tips. Each starts ranking for its own searches.
Why it matters
Category pages capture the high-volume, high-intent product searches that drive most organic revenue for online stores.
