Short answer
There is no fixed number. What you need depends on the links pointing to the pages you compete with, how relevant and reputable your linking sites are, and how well your content matches search intent. Compare your page with the current top results for the keyword, and close the gap with quality links.
The full answer
Link counts are a poor target because links differ enormously in value. One link from a respected industry publication can do more than hundreds from unrelated sites, and some links, such as paid or spammy ones, can do harm.
A better way to size the work:
- List the pages ranking in the top five for your target keyword.
- Compare the number of distinct, relevant referring domains to each page and to each site overall, using a backlink tool.
- Check what those pages have that yours doesn't: depth, original data, better answers or a stronger brand.
- Decide whether you need more links, better content or both. Often content is the larger gap.
Niche and local terms can rank with very few links, while competitive national terms may need sustained digital PR. Internal links matter too: linking to the target page from relevant, well-linked pages on your own site costs nothing and is often overlooked.
For AI visibility, think in mentions as well as links. Being cited as a source in articles and discussions helps assistants recognise your brand even when the mention isn't linked.
