Content & Link Building

Content and links are how a site earns relevance and trust, with search engines and with AI assistants. These answers cover how often to publish, when AI-written content is a problem, how to structure topics, how to write passages assistants quote, and how to earn links without breaking Google's rules.

Questions in Content & Link Building

  1. How often should I publish new content for SEO?

Publish as often as you can maintain quality, not to a fixed quota. For most businesses, a few genuinely useful pages a month beat many thin ones. Updating and improving existing pages that already rank is often a faster win than publishing new ones. Consistency matters more than volume.

  2. Is AI-generated content bad for SEO?

Not by itself. Google judges content on its quality, not on how it was produced. But using generative AI to publish many pages without adding value for users counts as scaled content abuse under Google's spam policies. AI works best as an assistant for research and drafts, with human expertise, fact-checking and original insight added.

  3. What are content clusters, and why do they help SEO?

A content cluster is a group of pages on one topic: a broad pillar page that covers the subject and several detailed pages on subtopics, all linked to each other. Clusters help search engines and AI assistants understand what you're an authority on, and help visitors move from general questions to specific answers.

  4. How do I write content that AI assistants will quote?

Answer the question in the first sentence or two, in plain language that makes sense out of context. Follow with specific, checkable detail: figures with sources, steps, comparisons and conditions. Use headings that match how people ask, keep facts consistent across your site, and add first-hand experience competitors can't copy.

  5. Is link building still important, and is it safe?

Links from relevant, reputable sites still help search engines discover and trust your pages, and mentions on those sites help AI assistants recognise your brand. Link building is safe when links are earned through useful content, research and genuine relationships. Buying links for ranking purposes breaks Google's spam policies and can cost you visibility.

  6. How many backlinks do I need to rank?

There is no fixed number. What you need depends on the links pointing to the pages you compete with, how relevant and reputable your linking sites are, and how well your content matches search intent. Compare your page with the current top results for the keyword, and close the gap with quality links.

  7. Why does original research earn links and AI citations?

Writers need sources for the claims they make. When you publish data nobody else has, such as a survey, a study of public websites or anonymised figures from your own work, other sites cite you as the source. Those citations bring links, and AI assistants answering questions on the topic can cite the same source.
