Content & Link Building

How do I write content that AI assistants will quote?

Short answer

Answer the question in the first sentence or two, in plain language that makes sense out of context. Follow with specific, checkable detail: figures with sources, steps, comparisons and conditions. Use headings that match how people ask, keep facts consistent across your site, and add first-hand experience competitors can't copy.

The full answer

AI assistants build answers from passages. A passage is easier to use when it's self-contained, accurate and specific. Writing habits that help:

  • Lead with the answer. Put the direct response under the question heading, then explain.
  • Make passages stand alone. Name the subject instead of relying on 'it' or 'this' from a previous section.
  • Be specific. 'Keep redirects for at least a year', with Google's guidance linked, is more useful than 'keep redirects for a while'.
  • Cite sources with dates for any statistic, and leave out figures you can't source.
  • Match the structure to the intent: steps for how-to questions, tables for comparisons, pros and cons for decisions.
  • Add what only you know: original data, examples from real work and expert opinion.

Don't chop content into fragments for AI. Google says there's no need to break content into tiny pieces, because its systems can understand multi-topic pages and pick out the relevant passage. Clear writing for people is the goal.

Finally, keep your facts consistent. If your site, profiles and press coverage describe your business differently, assistants may repeat the wrong version.
