Paid Search (Google Ads & ChatGPT Ads)
Paid search brings traffic from the day a campaign goes live, if the numbers work. These answers explain how ChatGPT Ads work and who can buy them, how they compare with Google Ads, how to set a Google Ads budget, what Quality Score measures and why clicks don't always become customers.
Questions in Paid Search (Google Ads & ChatGPT Ads)
What are ChatGPT Ads, and how do they work?
ChatGPT Ads are sponsored placements that OpenAI began showing in ChatGPT in 2026. They are labelled as sponsored, shown separately from ChatGPT's answer and matched to the topic of the conversation. OpenAI says ads don't influence answers and advertisers don't see users' conversations. Ads appear on the Free and Go plans, not on paid plans.
Who can advertise on ChatGPT, and in which countries?
Businesses buy ChatGPT Ads through OpenAI's self-serve Ads Manager, which opened to US advertisers first and has since expanded to many more countries, including markets across Europe. Availability, formats and policies are changing quickly, so check OpenAI's Ads Manager availability page for your country before you plan a campaign.
Should I use ChatGPT Ads or Google Ads?
For most businesses, Google Ads remains the main paid search channel because it reaches people actively searching for a product or service, with mature targeting and measurement. ChatGPT Ads are a newer channel matched to conversation topics. Test them with a separate, modest budget once your Google Ads tracking and landing pages are working well.
How much should I spend on Google Ads?
Work backwards from your economics. Estimate what a customer is worth, your conversion rates and the cost per click in your market, then calculate the break-even cost per click and the budget needed to win the number of customers you want. Start with enough budget to gather conversion data, then scale what's profitable.
What is Google Ads Quality Score?
Quality Score is a 1 to 10 diagnostic that Google Ads shows for each keyword, based on expected click-through rate, ad relevance and landing page experience. Google says it isn't an input in the ad auction; it indicates how your ads compare with other advertisers'. Improving the three components usually improves performance and costs.
Why are my Google Ads getting clicks but no conversions?
Usually one of four things: conversion tracking is broken or missing, the ads attract the wrong searches, the landing page doesn't match the ad's promise, or the offer isn't compelling enough to act on. Check tracking first, then review the search terms report, then test the landing page on a phone as a first-time visitor would.
Do Google Ads improve organic rankings?
No. Google states that advertising with Google won't have any effect on your site's presence in its search results, and that it never accepts money to include or rank sites. Ads and SEO still complement each other: paid campaigns reveal which keywords convert, and appearing in both paid and organic results can win more clicks.
