AI Search & GEO/AEO
AI assistants now answer many of the questions people used to type into Google. These answers explain generative engine optimization (GEO) and answer engine optimization (AEO) in plain terms: what they are, how they relate to SEO, which AI crawlers to allow, and how to measure whether assistants mention your brand.
Questions in AI Search & GEO/AEO
What is generative engine optimization (GEO)?
Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of making your brand easy for AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews to find, understand and cite. It builds on SEO: crawlable pages, clear answers, consistent facts about your business, and mentions on the sources those assistants trust.
What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is structuring content so that search features and AI assistants can use it as a direct answer. It means leading with a clear, concise answer to a specific question, then supporting it with detail. AEO overlaps with GEO, the terms are often used interchangeably, and both rest on SEO fundamentals.
Is GEO different from SEO, and do I need both?
GEO and SEO share the same foundation: pages that can be crawled, indexed and trusted. SEO targets rankings in search results; GEO targets being named or cited inside AI answers. Most brands need both, because AI assistants often retrieve from search indexes and the open web, so weak SEO usually means weak AI visibility too.
How do I get my brand mentioned by ChatGPT?
Make sure OAI-SearchBot can crawl your site, publish pages that answer buyers' questions clearly, keep facts about your business consistent everywhere, and earn mentions on sites ChatGPT is likely to retrieve, such as reviews, comparisons and industry publications. No one can guarantee a mention, so track a fixed set of prompts over time.
How do I appear in Google AI Overviews?
Google says there are no extra requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Google Search with a snippet. Beyond that, the usual SEO work applies: helpful, original content, a sound technical setup, and clear answers to the questions people search for.
Does llms.txt help AI search visibility?
There is no evidence that llms.txt improves visibility in the major AI search products. Google says Search doesn't need AI text files, and you don't need one to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. Publishing one is harmless, but put your effort into crawlable pages, clear answers and third-party mentions first.
Should I block AI crawlers like GPTBot?
Block only what you have a reason to block. AI companies separate training crawlers from search crawlers: OpenAI's GPTBot collects training data, while OAI-SearchBot powers ChatGPT search results. Blocking GPTBot keeps content out of training but still lets you appear in ChatGPT search if OAI-SearchBot is allowed. Blocking search crawlers removes you from those answers.
How can I measure my brand's visibility in AI assistants?
Pick a fixed set of prompts your buyers would ask, run them regularly in ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, and record whether your brand is mentioned, cited or linked, and which competitors appear. Track your share of mentions over time, because individual answers vary between sessions.
