Query fan-out

Definition

Query fan-out is a technique where an AI search system splits one question into several related searches, then combines what it finds into a single answer.

Query fan-out explained

When you type a complex question into Google's AI Mode or a chat assistant with search, the system rarely searches for your exact words once. It generates a set of sub-queries covering different angles of the question, such as definitions, comparisons, costs and recent changes, searches for each, and reads the most relevant pages before writing a response.

Google names query fan-out as one of the techniques behind AI Overviews and AI Mode. Other assistants that search the web work in a similar way, although the details differ and are rarely published.

The practical consequence is that the page cited for a question is not always the page that ranks for the question itself. It may be the page that ranks well for one of the hidden sub-queries. Covering the supporting questions around your core topics, each with a clear answer under its own heading, increases the number of fan-out searches your site can win.

Example

A founder asks ChatGPT “is it worth moving our team to a four-day week?”. Behind the scenes the assistant might search for productivity research, payroll implications and scheduling tools. If your HR software brand has a clear page on scheduling a four-day week, it can be cited through that sub-query.

Why it matters

Fan-out explains why narrow, specific pages can be cited for broad questions, and why topic clusters that answer the follow-up questions tend to show up more often in AI answers.
