Keyword research

Definition

Keyword research is finding and prioritizing the searches and questions your customers use, so you know which pages to create and improve.

Keyword research explained

Good keyword research starts with customers, not tools. Sales calls, support tickets, reviews and community threads show how people describe their problems. Keyword tools then add estimated search volume, difficulty and related queries, and the results pages show which intent and format each query needs.

A useful keyword list records, for each query:

  • Intent: informational, commercial or transactional.
  • Business value: how close the searcher is to becoming a customer.
  • Difficulty: how strong the pages already ranking are.
  • Estimated volume and trend.
  • The page that should target it, so two pages don't compete for the same query.

For AI search, add the longer, conversational questions people ask assistants. They rarely show up with volume in keyword tools, but they reveal the comparisons and objections buyers raise before they talk to sales.

Example

Your project management software team brainstorms topics, then checks real queries. Research shows buyers search “project management software for construction” and “Gantt chart template for contractors”, so you prioritize a construction use-case page and a free template over a generic productivity article.

Why it matters

It decides where your content budget goes. Research tied to business value stops you writing pages that attract traffic but never produce customers.
