Definition
A pillar page is a comprehensive page that covers a broad topic at overview level and links to more detailed pages on each subtopic.
Pillar page explained
A pillar page targets the broad version of a topic, the kind of search where people want to understand the whole subject, and acts as the hub of a content cluster. It should answer the main question clearly at the top, summarize each important subtopic in its own section, and link to the detailed page for each one.
Good pillar pages are useful on their own. They are not just a list of links, and they are not so long that readers get lost. A table of contents, clear headings, short summaries and visuals help. Keep the pillar updated as you add cluster pages, so it always reflects the full depth of your coverage.
Pillar pages often become a site's strongest pages over time, because other sites link to overview resources. Internal links then pass some of that strength to the detailed cluster pages that serve more specific searches.
Example
Your ecommerce platform publishes “The complete guide to selling online” as a pillar page, with sections on choosing products, setting up a store, payments, shipping and marketing, each summarized briefly and linking to a detailed guide on that step.
Why it matters
A strong pillar gives search engines a clear main page for a topic and gives visitors a starting point that leads them deeper into your content.
