Liquid is the open-source template language Shopify themes use to load store data, such as products, prices and collections, into HTML pages.
Liquid explained
Liquid was created by Shopify and is also used by other platforms. It combines HTML with objects that output data, such as a product's title or price, tags that add logic, such as loops and conditions, and filters that format values, such as currency or image sizes.
For SEO work on Shopify, Liquid is where most technical fixes happen. Examples include:
- Writing better default title tags and meta descriptions for templates.
- Adding or correcting JSON-LD structured data for products and collections.
- Controlling canonical tags and robots meta rules on particular templates.
- Loading images at appropriate sizes to improve LCP.
- Adding content blocks such as FAQs to collection pages.
Because Liquid runs on Shopify's servers, the output reaches browsers and crawlers as ready-made HTML, which is good for SEO. Edits should still be made on a duplicate theme and tested before publishing.
Example
Your Shopify collection pages all share the same generic meta description. A small Liquid change builds each description from the collection's name and a short custom field, so every collection gets a unique, accurate description.
