MQL (Marketing Qualified Lead)

Also called: SQL, sales qualified lead

Definition

An MQL (marketing qualified lead) is a lead that marketing judges likely to become a customer, based on fit and engagement, before sales takes over.

MQL explained

Not every form fill is a sales opportunity. Businesses usually define criteria for an MQL, such as company size, industry, job role, and actions like requesting a demo or visiting the pricing page. When a lead meets them, it is passed to sales, which may accept it as a sales qualified lead (SQL) after a conversation.

For SEO, MQLs are a much better success measure than traffic. A B2B site can double its visitors with educational content and see no change in pipeline. Tracking which landing pages and queries produce MQLs, and later SQLs and revenue, shows which content actually drives business.

That requires connecting your analytics to your CRM: capturing the landing page and source of each lead, and following it through to won or lost deals. Once that link exists, SEO reports can talk about pipeline rather than rankings.

Example

Your cybersecurity firm's organic traffic grew, but sales complain about lead quality. Tracking MQLs by landing page shows most qualified leads come from three compliance guides and the pricing page, so the content plan shifts toward similar topics.

Why it matters

Measuring SEO in MQLs keeps the program focused on the searches and pages that produce sales conversations, not just visits.
