Definition
A zero-click search is one where people get their answer on the results page, from a snippet, AI Overview or other feature, without clicking a result.
Zero-click search explained
Search engines increasingly answer questions directly: featured snippets, knowledge panels, calculators, weather and sports boxes, local map results, and now AI Overviews. For many simple factual queries, such as a definition, a unit conversion or opening hours, the searcher has what they need without visiting a website.
Zero-click behavior is not new, but AI-generated answers extend it to longer, more complex questions that used to send visits to articles. This mainly affects informational content. Searches with commercial or transactional intent, where people want to compare, buy or book, still tend to lead to clicks.
The answer is not to abandon informational content but to change how you measure it. Being the cited source, or the brand named in the answer, has value without a click. Track impressions and branded searches alongside clicks, and aim click-driven content at questions where people need more than a one-line answer.
Example
Your recipe site ranked well for “how long to boil an egg”, but clicks fell after an AI Overview began answering it directly. Your page is still cited in that answer, so your brand stays visible, while your detailed meal-planning guides keep earning clicks.
Why it matters
If you judge SEO only on clicks, the growth of zero-click results looks like decline. Measuring visibility and brand demand gives the fuller picture.
