Definition
A CTA (call to action) is the prompt, usually a button or link, that tells visitors what to do next, such as “Book a demo” or “Get a quote”.
CTA explained
Every page should have a purpose, and the CTA is how the visitor acts on it. On a landing page it is the main conversion. On a blog post it may be a softer next step, such as downloading a checklist or reading a related guide.
Strong CTAs tend to:
- Use specific, action-led wording that says what happens next, such as “Get my free audit” rather than “Submit”.
- Stand out visually, with enough contrast and space around them.
- Appear where the visitor is ready to act, often above the fold and again after key sections.
- Reduce worry with a short line nearby, for example about response time or cancellation.
- Match the visitor's intent: a buyer-ready page can ask for a call, while an early-stage article should offer something lighter.
Test CTA wording, placement and offer rather than guessing. Small changes can shift conversion rates noticeably.
Example
Your pricing page ends with a grey “Submit” button. Changing it to a high-contrast “Start my free trial” button, with “No card required” underneath, tells visitors exactly what they get and removes a common worry.
Why it matters
A clear, relevant CTA is the bridge between attention and action. Without one, even well-matched traffic leaves without converting.
