Definition
A Shopify app is an add-on, from the Shopify App Store or custom-built, that adds features to a store such as reviews, subscriptions or SEO tools.

Apps are how most Shopify stores extend the platform. They can add product reviews, loyalty programs, subscriptions, bundles, pop-ups, translations, SEO tools and integrations with marketing and fulfilment systems.
They also bring the most common Shopify performance and SEO problems:
- Scripts and styles loaded on every page, slowing down LCP and INP.
- Leftover code: some apps leave snippets in the theme after being uninstalled.
- Duplicate features, such as two apps both adding structured data or redirects.
- Pages or URLs created by apps that aren't useful to index.
Review apps periodically: list what each does, remove any you no longer use, check the theme for leftover code, and measure speed before and after installing anything new. Where possible, prefer apps that integrate through theme app extensions, which are easier to remove cleanly.
Example
Your store tried three different review apps over two years. Only one is still installed, but a theme review finds code from the other two still loading on every product page. Removing it speeds up those pages without losing any feature.
Why it matters
Apps shape a Shopify store's speed and stability. Too many, or badly removed ones, quietly cost conversions.
