Shopify theme

Also called: Shopify themes, Online Store 2.0, theme customization

Definition

A Shopify theme is the set of templates, styles and settings that controls how a Shopify store looks and how its pages are built.

Shopify theme explained

Themes are built with Shopify's Liquid templating language plus HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Modern themes use sections and blocks, so merchants can rearrange page layouts in the theme editor without code. Stores can buy a theme from the Shopify Theme Store, customize one, or have one built.

The theme affects SEO and conversion directly. It decides:

  • How headings, titles and structured data are output on each template.
  • How fast pages load and respond, through its scripts, images and fonts.
  • How collection filters, pagination and product variants are handled.
  • How easy it is to add content such as buying guides and FAQs.

Good practice is to duplicate the live theme before any edit, keep custom code documented, apply theme updates carefully so customizations aren't lost, and test speed and structured data after significant changes.

Example

Your Shopify store's theme outputs product titles as H2s and has no Product structured data. Editing the product template to use an H1 for the product name and adding Product markup that matches the page improves every product page at once.

Why it matters

The theme is the foundation every product and collection page sits on, so its quality affects rankings and conversion rate across the whole store.
