A WordPress core update is a new release of the WordPress software itself, delivering security fixes, bug fixes or new features.

WordPress releases come in two broad types. Minor releases mainly fix bugs and security issues, and by default WordPress installs them automatically. Major releases add features and can change how the editor, themes and plugins behave, so many sites update them manually after checking compatibility.
Falling behind on updates is risky. Security fixes are published openly, which also tells attackers what to look for on sites that haven't updated. At the same time, updating carelessly can break a site if a theme or plugin isn't compatible with the new version, or if the server's PHP version is outdated.
A safe update routine is:
- Take a full backup of files and database first.
- Check theme and plugin compatibility notes.
- Test major updates on a staging copy.
- Update, then check key pages, forms and checkout.
- Keep PHP on a supported version as well.
Example
A major WordPress release is out and your site's page builder hasn't confirmed compatibility yet. You apply it on staging first, find one broken layout, wait for the builder's update, then update the live site with a fresh backup in place.
