Definition
An SEO audit is a structured review of a site's technical health, content and authority that finds what holds back its search performance.
SEO audit explained
An audit usually combines a crawl of the site, data from Google Search Console and analytics, and a review of competitors. The aim is not a long list of warnings from a tool, but a short list of changes ranked by likely impact and effort.
A thorough audit covers:
- Crawling and indexing: robots.txt, sitemaps, canonical tags, status codes and redirect chains.
- Performance: Core Web Vitals and mobile usability.
- Content: intent match, thin or duplicate pages, cannibalization and content decay.
- On-page elements: titles, headings, internal links and structured data.
- Authority: backlinks, brand mentions and competitor gaps.
- AI search readiness: crawler access and how assistants describe the brand.
Audits are most useful before a big change, such as a migration or redesign, and when performance drops without an obvious cause.
Example
Your organic traffic has been flat for a year. An SEO audit finds that faceted filter pages are eating crawl budget, several key pages are canonicalized to the wrong URL and your guides rank but never link to product pages. Those three fixes become the first month's work.
Why it matters
An audit turns guesswork into a plan. It shows which problems actually cost you rankings and revenue, so effort goes to the fixes that matter.
