Definition
SEO (search engine optimization) is improving a website so it appears more often and higher in unpaid search results for searches that matter to you.
SEO explained
Search engines such as Google and Bing crawl the web, store pages in an index, and rank them for each search using hundreds of signals. SEO is the work of making your pages easy to crawl and understand, genuinely useful for the searches you want to appear for, and trusted enough to rank above alternatives.
It is usually described in three parts:
- Technical SEO: crawling, indexing, site speed, structured data and site architecture.
- On-page SEO and content: pages that match search intent, with clear titles, headings and answers.
- Off-page SEO: links, mentions and reviews that show other people vouch for you.
Modern SEO also feeds AI search. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI features retrieve pages from search indexes before answering, so a site that ranks well and states facts clearly is more likely to be cited. That is why GEO and AEO are usually treated as extensions of SEO, not replacements for it. Results build over months rather than days, and no one can promise a specific ranking.
Example
Your bakery-supply business wants to reach cafe owners searching “wholesale sourdough flour”. Fixing slow product pages, writing a buying guide that answers their questions and earning a mention in a trade magazine, so the page ranks for that search without ads, is SEO.
Why it matters
Organic search keeps bringing in visitors without paying for each click, and the same work makes your brand easier for AI assistants to find and cite.
